It was founded by the then Maharaja of Mysore, His Highness Sri Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV and his Dewan, the renowned engineer - statesman, Sir M. Visvesvaraya, 27 July 1916. The Maharaja of Mysore became its first chancellor. A bill to establish and incorporate the University of Mysore was introduced in the Legislative Council in 1916. It was adopted unanimously on 17 July 1916.
