The University was established around 1978 by the state of Gujarat and the total area of the campus is 269 hectares, divided into 3 place. The University is to provide high quality teaching and research programs in the colleges as diverse as Science, Arts, Commerce, Engineering, Medicine, Management, Rural Studies and Law. The University currently has 20 postgraduate departments and 4 institutes recognized.
