Burdwan University started on 15 June 1960, Sukumar Sen, an ICS, as its first rector. It was after the abolition of zamindari in the fifties that Uday Chand Mahtab, the last representative of the Burdwan Raj showed his magnanimity in leaving almost the entire edifice of Burdwan available to the state government.
