Sambalpur University Act was passed by the Orissa Legislature on December 10, 1966 to fulfill the long cherished dream of the people of Western Orissa for establishment of a university. The University became operational on January 1, 1967, with Prof.Parsuram Mishra as the first vice-chancellor. The University opened on January 4, 1967 by the Honorable Chancellor ANKhosla.
