The name, Nagarjuna University is very significant because the great preceptor Acharya Nagarjuna Buddhist philosopher and a university founded on the banks of Krishna River centuries ago and become a great center of learning, attracting a large number of teachers and students form distant parts of the world. The University was established by Act 43 of 1976 of the AP State Legislature and is governed by Act 4 of 1991 which covers six state universities. The present Acharya Nagarjuna University is not far from where halo, which derives its livelihood and moral and intellectual context in which Acharya Nagarjuna University has been renamed through Acharya Nagarjuna University AP Universities (Amendment) Ordinance 2004, promulgated by the Governor of Andhra Pradesh.
