Public Petition dated 11.11.1839 initiated the establishment of the University of Madras. It was in January 1840 with Norton Mr.George as its Chairman, University Council was constituted. In 1854, after a lapse of 14 years of Government of India formulated a systematic educational policy for India and following this on 5 September 1857 by an act of the Legislative Council of India, the University was established. The University is organized on the model of London University.
